A Study on the Serum Growth Hormone in Diabetics

Abstract
|

|
Employing a radioimmunoassay the serum growth hormone level was measured in 14 diabetic patients and 4 healthy persons. All the subjects were investigated while fasting in the resting state and the following results were obtained.
1. The mean basal serum growth hormone value of diabetic patients was significantly higher than that of control subjects.
2. Among the diabetic patients the mean basal serum growth hormone values were much higher in both groups with diabetic retinopathy and with high blood glucose level.
3. After L-Dopa stimulation, the serum growth hormone levels were significantly elevated in all of diabetic patients as well as in normalpersons.
These results suggested that abnormal secretion of the growth hormone might have close relationship with the metabolic disturbance and the vascular complication of diabetes mellitus.
